TE OP-Z as DJ controller

A small app that allows you to correctly use Teenage Engineering OP-Z (knobs scratching in particular) in any DJ application. You can even use OP-Z as synth in parallel with this, only 16 MIDI channel (motion track) is used.

How to use it?

1. Install it.

   • On Windows you can extract it anywhere. Best place is “C:\Program Files (x86)\OPZ as DJ controller”, but it really doesn't matter, as long as you can find it :) You can also create a desktop shortcut to it.

   • On Mac OS open .dmg image and drag-n-drop the app to Applications folder.

2. Connect your OP-Z by USB-C MIDI, turn it on and activate the Motion track (the latest one)

3. Open the app

4. Select OP-Z MIDI device in Input port and your virtual MIDI port as Output port.

   • On Mac OS the app creates the virtual MIDI port called "OPZ as DJ virtual port" or you can use default IAC driver bus.

   • On Windows you should create a virtual MIDI port by yourself using LoopBe1 or loopMidi.

   • Note: if you can't find OPZ MIDI Input device then try to reconnect it (maybe using different cable?), then try to restart it or even reboot your PC/notebook at the very least

5. Press "Start" button.

6. Open your favorite DJ app like Tractor, Virtual DJ, djay, etc

7. In its Settings, select the output MIDI device as controller MIDI device.

8. Map it to app controls. Use buttons and knobs to bind it to DJ things.

   • Note: You can use knobs as turntable jog wheels on the Motion track only (16 MIDI channel). On all other channels, their work mechanics are no different from the usual ones.

   • Tip: You can switch the pages of knobs press Shift button on OPZ. This gives you 16 relative value MIDI knobs (4x4 pages) to use in your DJ app!

There are also several useful settings available to you in the app window:

1. -/+ sensitivity. They determine the sensitivity of the knobs in both directions of rotation. Try to pick it up for yourself!

2. Send zero updates. Whether to send minimal changes to the knob rotation to the program. Some DJ programs treat it as a step forward, which is not always true.

3. Minimize to tray. Whether to allow the application be minimized into a tray icon.
